Germany’s devastating summer flood was not the country’s first but it highlighted the need to do more to protect communities as climate change continues to threaten our cities and towns.
Planners and engineers have been looking at ways to work with the natural world, rather than trying to control it.
Two decades ago, parts of eastern Germany were devastated by historic flooding, forcing the state of Saxony to act in order to save it from future events.
Natalie Carney reports from the state capital Dresden.
