Over the next four weeks, two billion people are expected to tune in to watch as Europe’s top footballers fight it out to be crowned the champions of Europe.
Euro 2020 is finally underway, after covid forced a 12-month delay and some major reorganisation.
And of course, all that has come at a huge cost to organisers UEFA – at a time when the worldwide game is trying to recover from two seasons ruined by the pandemic. So, on this edition of The Agenda, Stephen Cole will be examining the financial health of what’s known as The Beautiful Game.
Inter Milan won its first Serie A title for 11 years this season, in largely empty stadiums. Steven Zhang, Chairman of Inter Milan discusses the challenges ahead for the club, and for European football in the wake of Covid and the collapse of the European Super League.
Of course, money was the main driver of the aborted attempt to launch the ESL – with club owners hoping to secure billions of dollars for the TV rights. Dan Jones, Head of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte joins Stephen to consider where the financial power really sits now in the world of football, and whether club owners ignore fan power at their peril.
And finally, Laura McAllister, Wales’s former women’s team captain and current Deputy Chair of UEFA’s Women’s Football Committee, tells us why the future of football could be female, as well as looking forward to the logistical and political issues of next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
