Between 2014 and 2017 6.5 million people traveled to Germany attempting to call the country home. At the height of the refugee crisis, Germany was a preferred asylum destination for millions.
Attracted by Germany’s strong economy and social welfare state, 1.7 million sought asylum in the country. Though many have accepted the newest Germans, nativist tensions in the country have risen.
The New Germans takes an in-depth look at the efforts to integrate and welcome the country’s newest residents as well as the growing political movement to prevent further immigration.
